They are attached to the wheel when a new tyre is fitted and they give you a short run flat option. This allows you to drive a short distance to a safe place without the flat tyre coming off or away from the wheel. The bands also hold the tyre beads in place which also helps prevent your wheel incurring any more damage on the road surface.
